A Violent Masterpiece by Jordan Harper

A Violent Masterpiece is a crime epic set over a short period of time in LA, as three different people are brought together by the rich and powerful’s secrets. Jake livestreams the city’s crimes to his followers. Doug Gibson is a lawyer trying to help the unprotected. And Kara works for Sub Rosa, a mysterious private concierge service that can get the uber rich anything they want. They all start looking into seemingly unrelated happenings, but as things get deeper and darker, they might all be on the brink of uncovering something huge.

I don’t usually go for crime fiction, but the summary of this one intrigued me, and it turned out to be the sort of film I’d watch in book form: highbrow crime thriller. The chapters alternate between the three different perspectives, telling their stories and revealing more about the overall plot. There’s a lot of parallels with real life rich people and the terrible things they’ve done or have rumoured to have done, making the narrative feel all the more desperate. I did find that the main characters felt at times a bit flat and they got lost in the drama of the rich people crimes and violence, but that didn’t stop me enjoying the book.

A Violent Masterpiece is a dark crime thriller that explores the reality of what money can buy, and it has the feel of a great crime film, which was what I wanted from it. It’s a very visceral depiction of LA, too.
